Here are some common sobriety tests administered by police:

  • Balance on one foot at a time
  • Count backwards
  • Recite the alphabet
  • Finger to nose test
  • Walk a straight line
  • Touch each finger to your thumb

What do police look for with a field DUI test? (usually during finger to nose test)?

  • The person’s ability to follow directions and instructions.
  • The amount and direction in which the person is able to maintain balance or sways.
  • Eyelid, body and leg shaking or tremors.
  • Muscle tone on the face or body appearing more rigid or relaxed than normal).
  • Any comments, statements or unusual sounds made by the person during the DUI test.
  • The person depth perception (and speed or lack of) when attempting to touch the nose.
  • Note where the person touches as he or she attempts to place the finger on the nose.

What law enforcement officers are concerned with are the fine motor skills of the driver.If you have a medical or any other condition that may influence your test results inform the police officer conducting the DUI test.
