Shoplifting is considered a misdemeanor petty theft (this will depend on the value of what was taken usually). First time shoplifters (depending on state laws) may be charged with a less serious crime (disorderly conduct, for example) and be ordered to pay restitution, perform community and or put on probation.
Regardless, having a good defense lawyer to deal with shoplifting charges is very important. Punishment for shoplifting can be anything from probation to jail time depending on the mitigating factors. For the professional shoplifter charges can be grand theft or larceny (and sometimes both).

Punishment for shoplifting includes jail or prison time, community service, fines, restitution, treatment programs and/or other penalties and sentences.

So what is the punishment for shoplifting?

The penalty for shoplifting will depends on the circumstances of each case. The courts will look at whether this is a first or repeat offense. According to the national Association of Shoplifting Prevention, there are two types of shoplifters:

There are professional shoplifters
These are people who steal for a living. They use what they steal and make a living from what they steal because they resell those items for profit.

Nonprofessional shoplifters
These are people that occasionally steal from stores, etc…The reasons they commit shoplifting vary. Most people have enough money to pay for the merchandise they steal and reasons for stealing are complex (i.e. habit, addiction or the thrill of the risk).
